Strategies & Tips from teachers for classroom management issues with laptops

Starting Class
- Have the procedure on the board (including when laptops will be used)
- Bell work (do at start of lesson to get students focused, does not need to be on laptop)
- As part of their engagement or participation grade is computer is in working order when class starts (fully charged batteries, booted, all applications closed)
- Have a place where their laptops go until they are given permission to use them

Getting Attention
- Closing laptop
- Have students go to 45 degrees, lay monitor flat, have them swing monitor around to face teacher
- Give step by step directions (path way)with laptop closed (and they had to repeat it before using laptop

Monitor Work (that they are on task)
- Use the wireless projector monitor (can view up to 16 screens at one time
- Rearranging the room so teacher can see as many screens as possible
- Moving around
- Have students use in tablet mode – easier to make sure students are on task – especially good for when students are reading on laptop
- Split tasks up by groups and only one laptop is used per group
- Looking at a students task bar to see what they have open (and having a classroom rule that task bars must be visible at all times)

Checking Work (that they complete on laptop)
- Use “snip” or screen capture tool to screen capture what students are doing and email to teach for a quick check
- Use editing & reviewing tools in word to track changes (peer editing)
- Randomly project some students work (student doesn’t know if their’s will be projected but everyone turns in)
- Send daily work to teacher (whether complete or not), teacher randomly decides which to grade

Other
- Have a plan for using the laptops, how will you deal with power management, students off task, etc. – make sure the students know these expectations and consequences
- Use the partner system, have them check each others screen
- Sit capable students with those that need more help
